Hong Kong Supermarket Cheatsheet: The Best Days for Grocery Shopping Deals

By team gini on September 19, 2018

Home cooked meals are not only good for your health, but also for your wallet. Even though cheap eats are available everywhere in Hong Kong around the clock, nothing beats a a meal at home where the ingredients were bought at a bargain. Supermarkets around the city are constantly pushing out promotions and it’s easy to take advantage of these shopping perks to get the most bang for your buck.

Wednesdays

Senior citizens get 10% any purchase on Wednesdays at Market Place simply by showing their Senior Citizen Card. If you’re a senior citizen yourself, this is an easy way to save money. On the other hand, if you haven’t reached the right age to be enjoying these benefits but know an elderly relative who might enjoy being accompanied to the store, you can help them save a few dollars by reminding them of their well- deserved perks.

Fridays to Sundays

If you like to get your shopping done before the work week starts, now’s a good chance to bulk up your purchases and do some meal prep to set yourself up for healthy choices on a daily schedule. HSBC credit card holders can get HK$50 PARKnSHOP Cash Vouchers when they spend over HK$500 in a single transaction on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from now until 28 October 2018 at PARKnSHOP, and its subsidiaries, like Taste and International. If you specifically use an HSBC UnionPay Dual Currency Credit Card, you can get an extra HK$20 Cash Voucher on top as well, earning you HK$70 towards your next purchase.

Saturdays and Sundays

If you’ve ever purchased something from a supermarket or convenience store in Hong Kong, chances are you’ve been handed a little sticker along with your receipt for that transaction. These stickers are “stamps” and have been a great promotional tool for gamifying the shopping experience for shops like Wellcome and 7-11. Once you collect enough stamps, you can redeem them for different prizes depending on the current promotion.

From now until 13 December 2018, Market Place by Jasons is offering one stamp for every HK$60 purchase that goes towards redeeming select appliances from KitchenAid. If you’ve been meaning to upgrade your kitchen knives or fancy owning a new coffee maker without actually buying one, you can use your Market Place shopping bills to fund some new gadgets. On weekends, you can collect stamps at twice the rate when you spend HK$400 or more.

The 3rd, 13th and 23rd of every month

For Hang Seng enJoy cardholders, you can get 8% off any purchase over HK$100 at Wellcome three days out of each month. If you can time your weekly grocery shopping to coincide with these dates, you’d instantly save some money just by setting a calendar reminder for yourself to hit the supermarket every 3rd, 13th and 23rd.

Between 31 August and 4 October 2018

PARKnSHOP is hosting a lucky draw where every transaction over HK$100 is entered into the drawing for cash vouchers, flight tickets and smartphones. According to the promotional website, one mobile phone of the latest model will be given out every day, all you have to do is participate in voting for your favorite household brands and upload a copy of your receipts via the lucky draw website. Best of luck!
